CHASING CORAL
Does what lies below reveal what lies ahead?
From our event leaders:
Coral reefs support 25% of marine life in our oceans; however, coral bleaching caused by warming ocean temperatures is currently happening at an unprecedented rate around the world. Battling equipment malfunction and unexpected forces of nature, the film focuses on a team of conservationists, marine biologists and underwater photographers who invent the first time-lapse camera to record real-time coral bleaching events. Synthesizing 500 hours of underwater footage and data from over 30 countries, Chasing Coral is a dramatic portrayal of the potential effects of global warming.
The American Club will be using Zoom to view and discuss this exciting and educational documentary. The event will be facilitated by Nancy and Charlie Erdrich of Boulder, Colorado, club members who spend part of the year in Stockholm (when there isn’t a pandemic). They have hosted documentary film events and classes in the Boulder area for the past six years and have previewed more than 150 films. With backgrounds in technology and education, and a keen interest in the documentary film genre, they bring a diverse perspective and practiced eye in film selection and presentation.
We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday, June 16, for Chasing Coral, “a love letter to an astonishing group of disappearing animals, an elegy to the scores of animals that have vanished, and a wake-up call to humanity.”
Nancy and Charlie will be facilitating this Zoom event from Colorado! They will use slides to provide additional background on the documentary and its creators, and film themes. Discussion questions will be sent to registered attendees prior to the event.
